What do you need from me?
When someone asks, “What do you need from me?” it’s more than just a question—it’s an invitation. It asks us to dig deep into our hearts and be honest about our needs, our desires, and our vulnerabilities. The weight of this question grows even more profound when it comes from the Divine.
In the moment I heard that question, the only response I could offer was: “Help.” It may have been the shortest prayer I’ve ever uttered, but it was heavy with meaning. It came from a place of deep longing and surrender, recognizing that if God was asking, He was also ready to respond. Behind my cry for help was the understanding that God’s answer could simply be, “Done.”
This reminds me of a moment in the Gospel of John (1:35-39), when two disciples heard John the Baptist declare, “Look, the Lamb of God!” and they began to follow Jesus. Jesus, seeing them, asked, “What do you want?” The question was simple, but the implications were vast. What were they truly seeking? What did their souls desire? In response, they didn’t ask for miracles or wisdom. Instead, they asked, “Where are you staying?”
Jesus didn’t give them a straightforward answer. He simply said, “Come, and you will see.” This encounter speaks to the depth of the Divine’s invitation. Jesus didn’t just want to give them a quick fix or a surface-level answer. He invited them into an experience, a relationship, where they would spend time with Him, learn from Him, and discover what they were truly seeking.
Similarly, when God asks us, “What do you need?” He isn’t just asking for a checklist of desires. He’s inviting us to be real, to be vulnerable, and to step into a deeper relationship where our needs—spoken and unspoken—can be met in ways we may not even fully understand yet. Like the disciples, we may not have all the right words, but we can still respond with honesty, trusting that He already knows what we need and is ready to say, “Come, and you will see.”
